RALEIGH, N.C. -- The family and friends of a former Edmonton resident slain in North Carolina held a public memorial service Saturday to mourn the 34-year-old woman whose body was found Monday near her home.

Local TV station WRAL reported that Nancy Cooper's two young daughters Bela, four, and Katie, two, carried a bouquet of roses and pictures of the girls and their mother were displayed on stage, with a large, white floral display between them.

Bradley Cooper, the victim's husband, did not attend the memorial service.

Nancy Cooper's parents said earlier this week that the family's pain would only subside if her killer came forward and confessed.

Her body was found Monday at a construction site about five km from her home in Cary, a Raleigh suburb. Bradley Cooper, told police that she went jogging eight days ago and he had not seen her since.

The family was granted temporary custody of the girls this week after filing an emergency petition. Nancy Cooper's parents and sister argued that Bradley Cooper was having an affair, is emotionally unstable and posed a danger to the children.

Bradley Cooper's lawyers have not directly commented on the custody issue, and police said the issue was private. His lawyers have said he is devastated by his wife's death and will continue to assist police as they investigate.

About 200 people attended the ceremony. Some of them said they did not know Cooper but had been moved by her death.

"I just couldn't get Nancy and her family out of my head," Nancy Ranta, of Apex, told WRAL. "I just wanted to come and show my respect. I just feel so sad for them and their loss. It's so unfair".

Authorities have not named any suspects in Nancy Cooper's death or released any details about how she died.

The victim's family will have a second service in Edmonton on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.

CARY, N.C. -- Monday would have been the 35th birthday for slain Cary mother Nancy Cooper.

Cooper was a fan of the Java Jive coffee house in Cary. There, her friends gathered to mark the special day.

"She used to come in here; this was one of her places to hang out and she used to bring her children in here. Her daughter used to love the Berry Banana Smoothie," said Java Jive owner Cherie Reed.

But now, Reed isn't making Americana's for Cooper -- her favorite drink -- or smoothies for her little girl. Cooper was found murdered near her home July 14 - two days after being reported missing by a friend.

But though Cooper wasn’t there, Reed says that doesn't mean her friends can't remember and celebrate her birthday.

A wall in the coffee house has been turned into a shrine for the murdered mother - and there, people can sign books for her and her daughters. Reed said the books will be sent to her family in Canada.

Eventually Reed wants to create a permanent shrine at her business. That way Cooper will be at her favorite hang out all the time.

This afternoon, Chief Pat Bazemore – who is declining interviews until a suspect is found – released this statement:

"Knowing that this would have been Nancy's 35th birthday, our thoughts go out to her twin sister, Krista, and the rest of their family as they do their best to find and celebrate the good in today.

“We know that the best gift we could give them and our community is to bring an end to this terrible period in their lives, and we're working hard each day with this in mind."

If you'd like to send a message to Cooper's family -- the memorial will stay up at Java Jive on Kildaire Farm Road farm road until this Wednesday.
